Before class, choose a book that appeals to you–it’s OK to “deface” your book, as it will be transformed into an original art piece. A quality hardback or paperback will do. Pick one that holds meaning for you, or create the meaning in the process. Thick-ish, or deckled pages are a plus, and the book will need to be in fairly good used condition. A sewn, rather than glued, structure, will hold up better. We’ll likely need to remove lots of pages to accommodate thicker work. We will have several examples for you to look through.

The class will be in two sessions, a few weeks apart, so that you’ll have time to work with your book and get your process going. You can use all sorts of materials–magazines, newspapers, found scraps of paper–and all this we’ll call ephemera. Bring your own ephemera to class that you want to use and we will have some for you to use as well. Look for texture, color, different weights of paper goods, images that you find interesting, photos, fabrics, and found materials. A mixture of slick/matte/textured materials is great for adding variety.

Acrylic paints, watercolors, inks, pencil, oil pastels can all be used. Things like combs, the edge of an old credit card, sponges and brushes make interesting marks.

You can make a book with a theme (ex. an ABC book, one devoted to birds/flowers/nature, a journey, music, etc), or a random collection of images and textures you love. I’ll show you how to make windows, and pockets to hold smaller books or items. We can sew, glue, and use fasteners.

This is a perfect class for personal exploration through art object creation. These are techniques that can provide a new form of self-expression.
