Street Art 101

Street Art 101
$150.00

Street Art 101 focuses on disrupting the industry norm of how a traditional painting class might be taught. This is all about thinking outside of the box while emphasizing artistic diversification - integrating graphic and street art into a composition. There are no rules. We will use spray paint, paint pen, pastels and stencils on glass. Students will complete an 11”x14” framed piece in the style of street art, to take home and hang on their walls!

Larry Stewart, of Larrydiditt, and a member at The Forge, will teach this class.

I am a Laguna Beach artist born and raised; I have been honing my craft in contemporary styled artwork for the last decade. Initially a full-time athlete, my notebooks overflowed with artistic creations. Eventually, it came time to hang up the cleats; with my old identity gone, I committed to something new. Soon the hours in the studio surpassed the hours in the ocean, and I knew that it would be this way forever. Years of athletics created an addictive passion for mastering every detail of my creation and finding new sources of inspiration. The only difference is that art is a game I cannot win, so it looks like I have a lifetime of competition ahead of me. - One Love, Larry Stewart

Build Your Own Picture Frame: Part 1

Build Your Own Picture Frame, Part 1
$125.00

This is a two-session class - you must complete Part 1 and Part 2 to complete your own frame.

Please purchase Part 1 ($125) and register for Part 2 (free).

It seems like one thing that many folks living in Nashville have in common is that they have been to see a band play at the Ryman or other local music venue.  Of those folks that go to shows here in Nashville, it seems that another thing they have in common is a small collection of posters from said shows.  Many posters are bought with the intention of framing them and hanging them up, but many of those intentions are never realized.

Now is your chance to make amends!

Students in The Great Frame-Up will each build a frame for a concert poster (or other similarly-sized piece of artwork) of their choosing.  Participants will learn to create a custom frame from scratch. There will be a wide variety of frame profiles that they can create, and the choice of how to apply color (or not) to the frame will be nearly unlimited.  Students will receive instruction on fabrication, assembly, sanding, staining / finishing, and hardware installation.  The end product will be an entirely original frame, built to professional standards.

The first week will cover the basic construction of the frame and instruction on how to apply stain and/or finish to the frame.  Depending on progress made during the first session, an additional brief visit to The Forge may be required to be fully prepped for the second class session.  Students will also need to make a quick visit to a local hardware store or glass shop to purchase a piece of glass to install in the frame during the second class session.  The second class session will cover 'finishing the finish' to achieve a professional-looking finish on the frame, then installation of the glass, poster, and hardware.

All materials are provided, except for glass and mat, which are optional.

Build Your Own Picture Frame: Part 2

Build Your Own Picture Frame: Part 2

Build Your Own Picture Frame, Part 2
$0.00

** Classes are transferable up to 48 hours before class, but not refundable.

Marquetry - Paint by Numbers with Wood Veneer, Part 1

Marquetry - Paint by Numbers with Wood Veneer, Part 1
$190.00

** This is a three-part class series

Wednesdays Evenings, 6:30-9:30pm

Marquetry is the woodworking craft whereby images are created using different colors of wood veneer.  The use of marquetry is nearly unlimited, as it can be applied to a wide variety of woodworking projects.  One of the very cool parts about marquetry is that while most established woodworking practices allow the designer to speak only in a given style, the use of marquetry allows the finished piece to tell a story.

While marquetry done through traditional means of production is a fairly time-consuming, exacting skill to master, this class will fully embrace the digital age; students will be taught using CAD and the laser cutter.  This means that as a craft, it can be picked up and practiced at a very high level of skill with very little practice.  Because the laser cutter is front and center in this class, students must be comfortable with using a vector (CAD) program of their choice before they start this class.  Pick your weapon: AutoCAD, SketchUp, RevIt, V-Carve, Rhino, Fusion 360, Adobe Illustrator, etc., all are fair game.  Come to the first class with an image picked out that you would like to produce in marquetry.  A block print-like image (solid tones in blocks of color) works best.  Students will be free to manipulate their image however they like.

The first week, we will meet to have an overview of the process and to run some very simple trials/demonstrations of the process.  Week two will have the students cutting out their kit of parts on the laser cutter, assembling them, and pressing them to a backer board with a vacuum press.  Week three will have the students sanding completed projects and applying a finish to them.

All needed materials for this class will be supplied to students by The Forge.

All needed materials for this class will be supplied to students by The Forge.

Traditional Mortise and Tenon Joinery With Power Tools
$110.00

Intermediate Level

This class will be a hands-on introduction to one of the stronger traditional woodworking joints, the mortise and tenon joint. This class will not spend any time on the Festool Domino joinery system. This is not a project-based class, so there will be no 'product' here, other than a sample joint (or two, if time allows). The focus for this class will largely be on technique. Students taking this class should have some experience on, and be comfortable with, the table saw.

Build Your Own Canvas Stretcher Frame

Build Your Own Canvas Stretcher Frame

Build Your Own Canvas Stretcher Frame
$110.00

Beginner Level

This class will explore a couple different approaches to building an absolute staple for painters: the canvas stretcher frame. Even though they cost a small fortune to buy in an art supply store, they are actually fairly easy and inexpensive to build. The main variable in their construction is what kind of tools / work space is available for the artist to use?

This class will present approaches for how to build stretcher frames for folks who have little work space and few tools all the way up through folks who have generous work spaces and a decent array of woodworking tools available to them. No matter where you fall on this spectrum, there will be a technique/process shown that will fit your profile.

As a part of this class, students will produce (and take home with them) at least one canvas stretcher frame. Students will also leave with an understanding of both the equipment and materials required for producing stretcher frames on their own in the future.

** Classes are transferable up to 48 hours before class, but not refundable.
