BRIAN WOODEN - Let's Fall Apart Together

  • Fort Houston 217 Willow Street Nashville, TN, 37210 United States (map)

STATE Gallery and Studios is proud to present Let’s Fall Apart Together: A New Exhibition from Brian Wooden. Opening with a public reception on Saturday, January 29th from 6pm to 10pm, the exhibition will continue through February 21st, 2022.

In a considerable departure from his earlier work, Wooden’s latest collection is a playful study of figure and characterization. In both his 2020 exhibition at The Gallery at Fort Houston and his 2021 showing at Modfellows, Wooden balanced animations of popular culture and his signature street art aesthetic - here, he moves further into original figures and bends the  boundaries of genre.

Characters are initially conceptualized as three-dimensional figures, and every progression stylistically is a regression of form. This simultaneous construction and deconstruction allows for Wooden’s figures to retain their human qualities while drifting into the whimsical or even surreal.

As Brian explains, “Let’s Fall Apart Together follows an idea from a structured thought into an  abstract one. Starting by using a playful cartoon language and establishing a friendly, seemingly familiar subject, the viewer is invited down a path of deconstruction, as the figure transforms into a series of loose line and shape.”
