WELCOME TO DOLINA!
This April, STATE Gallery and Studios at The Forge is proud to present Dolina: The Work of Alena Mehić. The exhibition will open with a public reception on Saturday, April 27th from 6pm to 9pm, and run through May 22nd.
Alena Mehić is a resident of STATE Gallery and Studios, a program which combines studio and exhibition space in an initiative that is Nashville’s first of its kind. This program is supported by community partners and a cornerstone of The Forge, an interdisciplinary arts nonprofit that exists to give space, tools and resources to artists and makers of all kinds.
In her latest work, Alena presents a stunning collection of varied media: notably, sculpture, installation, paintings and drawings. Dolina places real-world people, places, and events alongside depictions of utopian futures as a way to question our perception of perfecting the future.
The entire installation functions as a sort of city center, using Alena’s hometown of Zavidovići as a broad blueprint, and gradually revealing inconsistencies and moments of uncertainty. Incorporating print media, set design, surrealistic elements, allusions to folklore, and parallel universes, the project examines the disconnect between past projected futures and current realities, through predominantly imagined space. Rich in ubiquitous symbolism, Dolina portrays images of an ideal era that transcends cultures and time periods throughout history.
Dolina opens on Saturday, April 27th from 6pm to 9pm; join us for the reception - and tour our town square - this exceptional journey is not to be missed!
