DISCONNECT : A NEW EXHIBITION FROM JOE GEIS

STATE Gallery + Studios is proud to present "DISCONNECT," a solo exhibition from multi-disciplinary artist and designer Joe Geis.

With a practice that focuses on murals, installations, and patterns, Joe explores the movement and balance that lines, shapes, layout, and negative space can create within different environments and spaces. DISCONNECT is an experiment and challenge in using the same tools, techniques, and materials as his large-scale installations, but on a smaller and more intimate scale.

The theme of DISCONNECT in this exhibition is directly influenced by the last year of Joe's life – the constant desire to disconnect digitally, the disconnect from friends and family felt from relocating to Nashville after a decade in NYC, the disconnect felt socially when turning in to his practice, and the disconnect from the artist he feels like he needs to continue to be.

Although the final stages of his process are very calculated and thought-out, the beginning is very much left to chance. Most elements in Joe's work are influenced by tangible objects and intangible moments, but he enjoys that some only see lines and shapes, while others can identify and resonate with something a little more recognizable and personal. Happy mistakes throughout the creation process lead to a more organic and well-balanced final piece.

Over the last few years, Joe has painted murals in Wynwood (Miami), Los Angeles, London, Brooklyn, Nashville, San Jose, Mumbai (India), participated in international mural festivals in Detroit, San Antonio, Durham, and Jackson (Michigan), and completed murals for companies such as Facebook, WeWork, Saatchi Art, Verizon, Bombay Sapphire, and The Infatuation.
